Propane Tank Safety Measures that can Prevent Fires and Injuries

August 26, 2024

Whether you’re planning a Labor Day barbecue, like to grill all year long or enjoy sitting at campsites surrounded by propane torches and lanterns, it’s critical that you use propane tanks and propane appliances safely.

The improper use of propane tanks, or accidents around propane, can not only lead to fires, but they can also cause injuries due to explosions and burns.

The following tips from the U.S. Fire Administration, AmeriGas and a variety of other sources can help you prevent fires and injuries while helping to ensure that your party, camping trip or evening quality time with your family is enjoyable.

Don’ts:

  • Never use outdoor propane appliances (including portable heaters, generators and grills) indoors or in enclosed areas. This could result in carbon monoxide poisoning, a fire, injury or death. Only use appliances that are designed and approved for indoor use.
  • Don’t walk away from your propane grill while it is lit; you should always keep your eye on it.
  • Never store or place a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area such as a basement, garage, shed or tent. It is illegal and highly unsafe to store propane tanks indoors.
  • Don’t try to modify or repair valves, regulators or other appliance parts.
  • Never smoke near propane tanks or appliances.
  • Do not let air out of gas lines by opening a valve or fitting in closed spaces, as you may release gas and not be able to smell it.

Do’s:

  • Keep a 3-foot safe zone around your grill. This will keep people and pets safe.
  • Place your grill well away from siding and deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Open your gas grill before lighting.
  • Store the tank in an upright position.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when re-lighting your pilot light.
  • Keep propane tanks away from direct sunlight, which can increase the pressure inside the tank.
  • In extreme heat, make sure there is a 10-foot radius around your propane tank, and remove debris that is easily ignited, such as leaves and rags.
  • When transporting the tank, keep it upright.
  • Regularly check the tank for leaks.
  • When connecting the tank to appliances like grills or heaters, ensure that the connections are tight and secure.
  • Make sure only qualified professionals refill tanks.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when using propane tanks for cooking or heating.
