Avoid Water Damage this Spring Season

Spring is here, and that means the heavy rainy season is coming. Severe rain showers often mean flooding in your area. Flooding can mean potential water damage to your home. It is important that you know how to prepare and avoid water damage during this spring season.
Floods are one of the most common hazards in the U.S. because they can happen anywhere at any time. To avoid water damage to your possessions this season consider some of the preventative tips:
Protect important papers
Important papers and documents should be moved to a place where they will remain safe and dry. Protect these essential items by using a safe deposit box or waterproof container. Remember to include insurance policies and other critical documents.
Clean gutters
Gutters and downspouts help prevent water from seeping into the ground that is next to the foundation of your home. With proper maintenance, the chance of flooding occurring in your basement is less likely to happen. Keep an eye out on your gutters several times a year. Check for debris or blockage that may prevent the flow of water.
Arrange basement
Floods can be unavoidable at times. Arrange any furniture and other items in your basement in a way that may prevent water damage to these items. Move valuable items from the bottom shelf to the top shelf where water cannot reach them.
Check your sump pump
Owning a sump pump is crucial when trying to prevent floods from happening in your basement. If your basement is more susceptible to flooding, it is always a good idea to have an inspection of your sump pump done. Always check to make sure that the valve is clear of dirt and debris and any obstructions from discharge line are cleared away.
